Le Petit Mouton is the second wine of Château Mouton Rothschild, made from the same vineyards and in the same cellars as the grand vin. It shows Mouton’s rich, ripe style in a slightly more approachable form and is made in limited quantities.
Château Mouton Rothschild, bought by Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild in 1853, is the only estate ever promoted in the 1855 Classification: after a long campaign by Baron Philippe de Rothschild, it was raised from Second to First Growth in 1973. It lies beside Lafite in the north of Pauillac.
Since 1945 every vintage has carried a label illustrated by a different artist, among them Chagall, Miró, Picasso, Warhol and Francis Bacon, which makes Mouton as collectable for its labels as for the wine.
