About Britannia

The Britannia is the Royal Mint’s flagship bullion coin. It was first struck in 1987, and since 2013 the gold Britannia has been made in 999.9 fine (24 carat) gold. Its reverse shows Britannia, the figure who has stood for Britain on its coins for centuries, holding a trident and shield.

Recent Britannias carry security features that are hard to copy, such as a design that changes when the coin is tilted. As UK legal tender, the Britannia is free of Capital Gains Tax for UK residents, and as investment gold it is free of VAT.
